When you work from home, you\u2019re already deprived of the friendly banter and chance encounters that happen in an office. When you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/tired-of-working-from-home\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work from home during a pandemic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you have the added burden of not being able to socialize in the same way that you would under normal circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So what can you do when you feel lonely at work and your workplace is your own home? First, take heart: Loneliness is common, even for people who live with family or roommates. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cigna.com\/static\/www-cigna-com\/docs\/about-us\/newsroom\/studies-and-reports\/combatting-loneliness\/cigna-2020-loneliness-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cigna\u2019s 2020 Loneliness and the Workplace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report, three in five American adults are lonely. Second, read on to take a closer look at loneliness: what it means, what science says about it, and how you can overcome it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But First, What <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Loneliness?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Merriam-Webster dictionary says that lonely means \u201cbeing without company\u201d or \u201csad from being alone,\u201d we all know that one can be surrounded by people and feel sad just as easily as one can be alone and feel content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relationship coach Kira Asatryan offers a richer definition in her book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/the-art-closeness\/201602\/the-surprising-antidote-loneliness\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stop Being Lonely<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><b>Loneliness is essentially sadness caused by a lack of closeness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also known as sadness caused by distance. This is why it doesn\u2019t work to simply surround yourself with people. His definition, as told to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/article\/2020\/04\/30\/qa-dr-vivek-murthy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NBA.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is as follows:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLoneliness is different than isolation and solitude. <\/span><b>Loneliness is a subjective feeling where the connections we need are greater than the connections we have<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u2026 You can be surrounded by many people but still feel quite lonely if you don\u2019t have strong connections and if you feel you can\u2019t be yourself with them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So before delving into the rest of this article, I\u2019d like you to <\/span><b>divorce the definition of loneliness from the idea of being physically alone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Does Being Lonely at Work Affect You?<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workplace Loneliness Hurts Job Performance<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deepdyve.com\/lp\/wiley\/the-mediating-role-of-work-alienation-in-the-effect-of-workplace-F66Xud492r?articleList=%2Fsearch%3Fquery%3Dworkplace%2Bloneliness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study on nurses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a public hospital in Turkey found that the more lonely they were at work, the lower their job performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/12\/03\/why-loneliness-lowers-your-performance-at-work.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that higher workplace loneliness corresponded to lower job performance for two reasons: lonely employees are less approachable and less committed to their organization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling Lonely Decreases Job and Life Satisfaction<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/files.eric.ed.gov\/fulltext\/EJ1149164.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study of elementary school teachers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Turkey found that a lack of social friendships at work decreased job satisfaction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1877042811027029\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study in Iran<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confirmed previous research that lonely people have lower levels of life satisfaction. Further, it found that emotional loneliness (a lack of close relationships) is more painful than social loneliness (a lack of social friendships).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Loneliness Is Bad for Your Health<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1000316\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meta-analysis of 148 studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that a lack of social relationships influences the risk of death as much as smoking and alcohol consumption\u2014and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exceeds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that of physical inactivity and obesity. In fact, researchers found that those with stronger social relationships are 50% more likely to survive than those with weaker social relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remote Workers Are Especially Prone to Isolation and Loneliness<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared to office workers, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/remote-work-skepticism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are more likely to report a lack of companionship and feeling isolated from others, according to Cigna&#8217;s 2020 Loneliness and the Workplace report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lp.buffer.com\/state-of-remote-work-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buffer\u2019s 2020 State of Remote Work<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> report found that loneliness once again showed up as one of the top three struggles for remote workers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6789\" src=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Buffer-Chart.png\" alt=\"lonely at work\" width=\"1664\" height=\"1178\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 Ways to Combat Work From Home Loneliness<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the negative effects of workplace loneliness and its disproportionate impact on remote workers, is there anything you can do to feel connected again? Thankfully, yes!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Lay Off the Social Media<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cigna report found that the more you use social media, the more lonely you\u2019ll probably be. For example, light social media users had an average loneliness score of 43.3, while moderate users had an average score of 44.7. The most lonely of all, though, were the very heavy social media users, clocking in at 47.3.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6791\" src=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-24-at-17.21.25.png\" alt=\"loneliness at work\" width=\"920\" height=\"466\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media is tricky because it lends the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illusion <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of closeness without the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reality<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of it. You can \u201clike\u201d and comment on Facebook photos of your friend\u2019s baby shower, but you\u2019ll still be painfully aware that you\u2019re not experiencing the moment with them and that those photos weren\u2019t intentionally shared with you, but to their hundreds of \u201cfriends\u201d on Facebook.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, when you\u2019re feeling lonely, instead of watching Instagram stories of your friends at birthday parties and pool hangouts you weren\u2019t invited to, text one of them and ask if they\u2019d like to do a video chat, or go for a walk outside and say hello to a neighbor.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Join a Coworking Space<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the coronavirus pandemic, some remote workers are even doing virtual coworking sessions, where they all join a Zoom meeting, have a short chat, and get to work. Sometimes just knowing others can see you and that you\u2019re all working at the same time (even if not in the same place) can stave off loneliness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Find Your Community Online<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes we feel lonely because we don\u2019t feel like we belong to a group that shares our values or interests. Thankfully, in this day and age, there\u2019s an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/best-digital-nomad-communities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online community<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for nearly every interest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some places where you can begin your search:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><b>Meetup.com <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">features in-person and online events based on interests. It\u2019s free to join.<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Nomad List<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an online repository of information about the best places around the world for digital nomads. It also offers a paid membership where you can access premium resources and a Slack group with others who work remotely and travel the globe.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6793\" src=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-24-at-17.24.21.png\" alt=\"online community\" width=\"1440\" height=\"765\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Freelancers Union <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">represents independent workers by providing community events and educational resources as well as advocating for laws and policies that protect freelancers. Membership is free.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Facebook groups <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are free to join and cover nearly every interest and industry imaginable. Just search for keywords such as \u201cwork from home\u201d or \u201cremote workers.\u201d<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Recognize That Technology Cannot Completely Replace In-Person Interaction<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As wonderful as technology is at facilitating social interaction (especially during a pandemic!), it cannot serve as a replacement for in-person exchanges. In fact, Cigna\u2019s study found that participants who interact with other people on a daily basis have an average loneliness score that is nearly 20 points lower than those who never have in-person interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Get Outside<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you go outside\u2014whether it\u2019s for a walk around your neighborhood or a work session at your fave coffee shop\u2014your chances of in-person social interactions greatly improve. Nourish Personal Relationships<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if you were working inside a crowded office, you wouldn\u2019t have been immune to loneliness. So it\u2019s not always the nature of your work that leads to loneliness\u2014it could be that your personal relationships need some nourishment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So instead of thinking of work from home loneliness as a work problem, consider it a personal issue too. You don\u2019t necessarily need to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/remote-work-communication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connect with colleagues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or find fellow freelancers to become friends with. Start fostering the relationships in your personal life with your significant other, roommate, family member, and friends.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Practice Vulnerability<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The antidote to loneliness, as we learned from Kira Asatryan, is closeness\u2014but people can\u2019t get close to you if you have your defenses up. The important thing to note here is that not everyone deserves your vulnerability, only those who have earned your trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some action steps to practice vulnerability:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><b>Be honest about how you feel. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thing about loneliness is that we\u2019re often too ashamed to admit that we\u2019re feeling it. Rather than creating closeness with others, our silence closes us off from them. So if a friend asks you how you\u2019re feeling, be honest about it. It will let them know you need extra support.<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>Ask for what you need. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be scary to ask for what you need because your request may be rejected, but often, it\u2019s the only way someone can know how to help you. For example, at the beginning of quarantine, a friend sent me a straightforward text message: \u201cI need to hear from you every day.\u201d That let me know that she was struggling and that I could help her by checking in daily.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Model the behavior you\u2019d like to see from others. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re lonely, it can be easy to withdraw from society and stop checking in with friends. But this has a compounding effect on your loneliness because people will assume you\u2019re doing fine and give you space. Instead, do the things you wish others would do for you. Send your friend a funny GIF, invite them for a hangout, or give them a call. You\u2019ll be surprised by how much your efforts will be reciprocated.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you decide to make a call, make sure to turn on <a href=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\">Krisp<\/a> so no background noise passes through.<\/p>\n<p>[demo]<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s Hope for Those Who Are Lonely at Work<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re feeling lonely at work, there\u2019s nothing wrong with you, and it\u2019s not a reflection of your value as a person or employee. Cultivate closeness by joining groups with like-minded people, distancing yourself from technology and social media, and allowing yourself to be vulnerable with those you trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d like to leave you with a challenge: If you\u2019re experiencing work from home loneliness, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tell<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> someone. It\u2019s even better if they work from home, too, or are a close friend.
