Many employees have been forced to telecommute due to the pandemic, and while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/work-from-home-coronavirus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remote work has several benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including increased productivity, for some, work-from-home performance is lagging. If that\u2019s you, you\u2019re not alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether it\u2019s caused by monotony, a lack of energy, or something else, this exhaustion can take a serious bite out of your productivity. So if you\u2019re tired of working from home, let\u2019s go over what might be causing it and what you can do to fix it.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#1 You Miss Social Interaction<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extroverts gain energy from social interaction, while introverts feel drained by it. If you\u2019re an extrovert working from home for extended periods, you\u2019re like a battery missing its charger (other people).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the truth is, extroverted or not, we <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> crave social interaction to some extent. It\u2019s part of being human. So if you haven\u2019t had <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> social interaction lately, that may be why you feel tired of working from home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Solution: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get creative with how you <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/remote-work-communication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stay connected to coworkers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while working remotely. Mimic social interaction virtually through communication tools like Slack and use apps like Donut to get to know colleagues online. Also, try integrating more phone or video calls into your work life, rather than just emails and chat messages. Lastly, if you can, spend time in-person with loved ones to get your social fix.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#2 You\u2019re Experiencing \u201cZoom Fatigue\u201d<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know I just recommended video calls in the above paragraph, but<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> too many<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of them can lead to \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/digiday.com\/marketing\/it-all-starts-to-blur-together-zoom-fatigue-is-here\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zoom fatigue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d a new term coined during the pandemic. And while video conferencing is the best substitute we have for in-person communication, it\u2019s still just a substitute\u2014and a poor one at that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video conferencing, whether via Zoom or another tool, creates a strange reality: Your brain registers the pixels on the screen as being the face of someone you know, but you are also aware that they\u2019re not <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> present. There\u2019s no possibility of a hug or a handshake. Plus, you have to deal with awkward delays when the video freezes up, something that wouldn\u2019t happen in a real-life convo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6642\" src=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/people-on-a-video-call-4226140-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have yet to find anyone who has captured the incongruity of video chats so eloquently as professor Gianpiero Petriglieri when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gpetriglieri\/status\/1246222551799541763\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he tweeted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cIt\u2019s easier being in each other\u2019s presence, or in each other\u2019s absence, than in the constant presence of each other\u2019s absence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Video conferencing can lead to negative perceptions, too. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/260609152_Why_are_you_so_slow_-_Misattribution_of_transmission_delay_to_attributes_of_the_conversation_partner_at_the_far-end\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involving audio calls, a delay of as little as 1.2 seconds was enough to make listeners rate the speaker as being less attentive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can video chats at least help fill your need for social interaction? Research is mixed. Though I found at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29499659\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one small study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggesting that video calls were beneficial for its elderly participants, a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochranelibrary.com\/cdsr\/doi\/10.1002\/14651858.CD013632\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review of three studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> involving 201 older adults concludes that the evidence to support the claim that video conferencing reduces loneliness is \u201cvery uncertain.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Solution: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of a video call, it might be better to do a phone call or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/audio-versus-video-conference\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">audio conferencing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It removes the awkwardness that ensues when someone\u2019s face freezes on the screen. It\u2019s also less likely to involve long delays caused by buffering video. But if you\u2019re out of mental capacity to process everything involved with video calls, see if you can just make that meeting an email instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#3 You Lack a Routine, or Your Routine Is Boring<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Variety is the spice of life, as they say. The richness and complexity of office life are woefully absent at home, especially if you live alone; there just aren\u2019t enough variables to create variety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People seem to be of two minds when it comes to routine during this pandemic: For me, I believe having a rigid routine keeps me sane and provides me with a sense of comfort. For others, though, routine is maddening; they miss the excitement of the unexpected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the one hand, having a routine can reduce stress because you know pretty much what to expect each day. That\u2019s less cognitively demanding. On the other hand, though, routines can become monotonous, leading to boredom, which can lead to tiredness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2017\/09\/170929093400.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study published in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature Communications<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, researchers discovered that the same region of your brain that controls sleep also controls motivation. So when there\u2019s a lack of the latter (i.e., when you\u2019re bored), you\u2019ll want to fall asleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Solution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you feel tired of working from home, examine which camp you fall into: routine or variety. If you long for routine, try creating and sticking to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/work-from-home-schedule\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work from home schedule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If you crave variety, try changing up your routine. What motivates you? Is it running? Painting? Reading a good detective novel? Do more of that, and you should start to feel more energized.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#4 You\u2019re More Sedentary Than Usual<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Employees often complain of how much sitting they do in the office, but the truth is, physically going into work is often more active than working from home. Think of all the little steps that add up: Walking to your car or public transit, getting up to chat with a colleague, joining coworkers for lunch at a nearby cafe. And for some, there are even gyms or exercise programs offered at work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6644\" src=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/woman-using-laptop-while-holding-a-cup-of-coffee-3759083-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1273\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when you\u2019re working from home, the commute to any place inside your house is probably <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pretty<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> short. Plus, with no coworkers around, it can be easy to forget to get up and take a break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Solution: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schedule movement into your day. If you have an Apple Watch or Fitbit, these devices can remind you when you\u2019ve been sitting for too long and it\u2019s time to move. Additionally, if you can rig up a standing desk, that can help reduce your sitting time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#5 The Boundaries Between Work and Personal Life Are Blurred<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re used to working from an office and are now having to work from home, the collision of work and personal life can be disorienting. You\u2019re used to having physical cues and boundaries that signal it\u2019s time to work. And when you leave the office, your brain knows that work is over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when your \u201coffice\u201d is now the kitchen table where you eat dinner with your family, that lack of physical separation between work and personal life means your brain never feels like it\u2019s off the clock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2018\/08\/180810091553.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virginia Tech study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the mere expectation of being available causes employees anxiety, even when they\u2019re not doing any work. Feeling like you\u2019re \u201calways on,\u201d even when you\u2019re just chilling on your couch, can be draining.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Solution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you can, create a physical space that is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only for work<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Even if it\u2019s a cheap desk you put in the corner of the living room. The more physical separation you can create, such as with room dividers or even a door, the better.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#6 You\u2019re Battling More Distractions Than Ever<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you\u2019re working from home, you\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/remote-work-distraction-tips\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">battling more distractions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than in the office\u2014or at least, you\u2019re battling very <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">different<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> distractions than you\u2019re used to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, office life is rife with distractions of its own, such as nosy colleagues, ringing phones, and pointless meetings. But home life has unique distractions that you may have never dealt with before while in \u201cwork mode:\u201d chatty spouses, crying children, and barking dogs, to name a few.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6645\" src=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/design-desk-display-eyewear-313690-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike workplace interruptions, home life interruptions aren\u2019t as easy to brush off\u2014you\u2019re called upon to be two things at once: a productive worker and a good spouse\/parent\/pet owner. You can tell a coworker, \u201cI\u2019m busy right now,\u201d without feeling guilty. Say that to your child, though, and it\u2019s a different story. That, in and of itself, is exhausting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Solution<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Gently but firmly communicate boundaries to everyone in your household. Let them know which hours you\u2019ll be working, so they know when it\u2019s \u201cquiet time.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/krisp.ai\/blog\/how-to-work-from-home-with-kids\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have kids<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a partner, perhaps you both can tag-team it: While you get work done, they can watch the children, and vice versa.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#7 You\u2019re Not Taking Restful Breaks<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you ever take a \u201cbreak\u201d from typing on your laptop by pulling out your smartphone and scrolling through social media? Me too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But science shows that\u2019s no break at all. Researchers at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2019\/08\/190819132130.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rutgers University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that being on your cell phone during a break can actually <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deplete<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> your mental capacity. In the experiment, some subjects completed challenging puzzles and then stopped half-way through to take a break with a cellphone, paper, or computer, while the rest took no break. When they returned to the puzzles, the group that had used cell phones on their break performed worse than any other break type\u2014and their cognitive depletion matched those who had taken no break at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To your brain, being on your phone is taxing. And when you\u2019re constantly connected to your phone, laptop, or smartwatch\u2014it\u2019s too easy to take breaks that aren\u2019t truly restful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Solution:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When you take a break, step away from the electronics! Go for a walk, grab a book, or sit outside and watch nature go by.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reenergize Your Work-From-Home Life<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After reading this, I hope you gain some clarity on why you feel tired of working from home. Often, there\u2019s a solution that you might not have considered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d be remiss, however, to leave out that unflagging tiredness can be a symptom of a medical condition.
