When it comes to flexibility, Shirley knows her stuff. In 1962, she founded Freelance Programmers. She established this software company to get around the gender discrimination of the day, building a business of and for women. <\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, in the early days of her business, she would change her name from Stephanie to Steve on business development letters so people would think she was a \u201che\u201d and not a \u201cshe,\u201d which allowed her to get her foot in the door.<\/span><\/p>\n
