Krisp is an app designed to block out any background noises during your conference calls and recordings, to make sure you always sound clear and professional. 

It uses AI technology to tell the difference between your voice and any distracting sounds in the background such as traffic, dogs barking, other voices or construction noise. It’s easy to download and set up and you can turn on the noise cancelling capability with the click of a button. 

This is a step-by-step guide to installing Krisp and using it on your Windows computer. 

What is Krisp?

When we designed the Krisp app, the AI listened to thousands of hours of audio in order to learn how to distinguish between the human voice and unwanted background noises. The result is an app that can automatically filter out all noise in your environment, while letting your voice come through loud and clear. 

Krisp works by adding a layer between your existing microphone and speaker and your conferencing app or recording software. It lets your voice pass through, but filters out all other sounds. 

The Krisp app performs all audio processing on your device without uploading your audio to the cloud, which means that your recordings and conversations are always kept private.

System Requirements

Krisp uses high quality machine learning technology to provide you with an excellent audio experience. For Krisp to work on your Windows device, you need to have enough RAM and a powerful enough CPU. 

Check the system requirements for Windows and make sure your hardware meets them. Also, you’ll need to have Admin access to your Windows system so that you can install apps. 

Krisp Windows System Requirements:

  • Windows 10 64bit operating system
  • .NET 4.6.2. or higher
  • Preferably Windows 1903 update or higher

Step One: Create a Krisp Account

The first step before downloading Krisp is to sign up and create an account. Visit Krisp.ai and click on the button that says “Get Krisp For Free.”

This button will take you to a sign-up page, where you can type in your email address and create your Krisp account. Also, there’s an option available to sign up with Google if that’s what you prefer. 

Keep an eye on your inbox. You’ll receive an email shortly that says, “Krisp Verification Code” in the subject line. If the email doesn’t arrive right away, you should check your Spam or Promotions folder to make sure it didn’t end up in there. 

This email has a 6-digit unique code that you’ll need so you can verify your Krisp account. Type in the code on the page that looks like this:

Step Two: Download the Krisp App

If you have followed the instructions in Step One, you will have confirmed your Krisp account. At this point, you’ll see a screen where you can click to download the app. Click the green button pictured here: 

Once the app is finished downloading, you’ll see an installation package called “krisp.msi” in your Windows toolbar. When you double-click on this krisp.msi file, you’ll open up the Installation Wizard. 

Step Three: Install the Krisp App

You’ve opened the Installation Wizard and you’re ready to start installing the Krisp App! Here’s what the first screen should look like: 

Click on the “Next” button. Then, click on the “Install” button on the next screen. 

After you click the “Install” button, you’ll see a prompt to confirm the action as a Windows admin or enter your Windows admin password. Click on the “Yes” button to continue or enter your Windows password if necessary. 

The installation will begin. When it’s complete, click on the “Finish” button. 

Nice work! Now Krisp is installed on your device! 

Let’s check and make sure it’s running…

If you have installed Krisp correctly, it should launch whenever you turn on your computer and always be running in the background. Let’s check and make sure. 

Take a look at your Windows taskbar in the lower right corner. You might have to click on the “up” arrow to see all the available icons. Do you see the Krisp icon? Here’s what it looks like:

If you see it there – good news! That means Krisp is up and running. 

HANDY TIP: If you want the Krisp icon to be always visible and easy to click on, just drag the icon to the main toolbar. 

If you don’t see the icon there, that means Krisp isn’t installed or is not running. If so, follow the next step. 

How to check if Krisp is installed on your device

Open up your Windows search bar and enter “Krisp” into the search bar. It should show the Krisp app like this: 

If it does, click on the app or simply hit Enter to launch it. 

If the app doesn’t come up in Windows Search, Krisp probably isn’t installed on your device. Try steps two and three again and if it still doesn’t work, reach out to our support team and we will be happy to help! 

You may need to ask your administrator to install it on your computer, as you may not have permission to install new apps. 

Step Five: Sign Into Krisp on Windows

The next step is to open up the Krisp desktop app on Windows and sign into your account. Here are the steps:

  1. First, find the Krisp app icon in the taskbar again and click on it.

  2. Once you’re inside the Krisp app, click on the button that says Get Started.
  3. This button will take you to https://account.krisp.ai/login.
  4. Since you already created an account in the first step of this tutorial, you should already be logged in. (If you haven’t created an account, go back to Step One and follow the instructions.)

You should see the following message, which means you are also logged into the app:

Let’s Test the Noise Cancellation

Now that you’re all logged in and set up, let’s check how well the noise cancellation features are working. 

All you need to do is make a short recording with some noise in the background. Here’s how to do it:

  1. First, open up the app and press “Test Noise Cancellation.”

  2. You’ll be taken to this screen, where you can record your voice in a noisy environment.

    Make sure your recording is at least seven or eight seconds long! Also, make sure you speak in the recording so that the AI can learn to recognize your voice. 
  3. Now you can listen back to the recording and use the Krisp toggle to mute the background sound. You should hear a big difference between the noisy original recording and the noise-cancelled version!

How to Set Up Krisp With Your Conferencing App

Krisp is designed to integrate with over 800 different conferencing and communications apps. You simply need to set up a two-sided configuration, which is a lot easier than it sounds. 

Follow the steps below to set up your conferencing app with Krisp. 

Setting Up Krisp With Zoom

Open up Zoom and go to Settings and then Audio. Change the Speaker/Microphone setting to Krisp. 

Keep in mind, the Krisp speaker might filter out your Zoom ringtone. To avoid that, you can select a different speaker for the Zoom sounds to play on.

Next, open up the Krisp app and choose the physical speaker and microphone you want to use. Turn on the Remove Noise toggles. 

Make a call to test it out! When a call is ongoing, the “Not Used” indicator will change to “Used by Zoom Meetings.”

Setting Up Krisp With Google Meet

Open up Google Meet and go to your Settings. Go to Audio and change the Speaker and Microphone to Krisp. 

Important Note: If your browser doesn’t allow you to change the speaker, you may need to try using Google Meet in another browser. For example, if it isn’t working in Safari, try using Google Chrome instead. 

Note: See that warning about using different devices as your mic and speaker? Don’t worry about it! The Krisp mic and speaker are digital devices, so it won’t be an issue. 

Now, go to Krisp and open up your settings. Select the physical microphone and speaker you want to use. Turn on the Remove Noise toggles.

Give it a try by making a test call to see if Krisp is working! Once you start your call, the “Not Used” indicator will change to the browser you are using Google Meet in. 

Setting Up Krisp With Microsoft Teams

Open up MS Teams and go to your Settings. You should see a section that says Devices. That’s where you can change the selected Speaker and Microphone to Krisp. 

Keep in mind that the Krisp app is designed to isolate only the human voice and filter out all other noises. Therefore, it might filter out your MS teams ringtone. If that happens, all you need to do is select a different speaker for your “Secondary Ringer.” 

Now, go into your Krisp settings and select the speaker and microphone you want to use. Make sure to turn on the Remove Noise toggles. 

Try out a noiseless call to make sure it works! When it’s working, the “Not Used” indicator will switch to “Used by Microsoft Teams” during the call. 

Setting Up Krisp With Skype

Open up Skype and choose Settings. Click on Audio & Video and change the Speaker and Microphone to Krisp. 

Because the Krisp app filters out all noises except for the human voice, it might filter out your Skype ringtone. To stop this from happening, choose the setting to use a different speaker for a “Secondary Ringer.” 

Now, go to the Krisp app and open up your settings. Choose the speaker and microphone you want to use. Turn on the Remove Noise toggles. 

Try making a Skype call to test whether the app is working as it should be. When you are in a Skype call, the “Not Used” indicator will switch to “Used by Skype.” 

Setting Up Krisp With Slack

Open up the Slack app and visit your Settings. Then, simply change the Speaker and Microphone over to Krisp. 

Then, open up the Krisp settings and choose the Speaker and Microphone you want to use. Be sure that the Remove Noise toggles are on. 

Make a test call to make sure that the noise cancelling features are working correctly. When you are using the app, the “Not Used” indicator will switch to “Used by Slack.” 

Setting Up Krisp on Your Browser

In general, when using a web-app in your browser, you can select Krisp microphone and speaker from the audio settings of the app.(Keep in mind that in some cases, web-apps don’t have dedicated audio settings. You’ll only be able to select Krisp when these settings are present.)

Follow the steps below to set up Krisp microphone with different browsers so that it works in any tab where a microphone is used.

Setting Up Krisp With Google Chrome

To set up Krisp on Google Chrome: 

  1. Copy the following URL in your Google Chrome bar: chrome://settings/content/microphone
  2. Pick Krisp microphone from the list of available options. 

Setting Up Krisp With Opera

To set up Krisp with Opera follow the steps below:

  1. Copy the following URL in your Opera browser bar: opera://settings/content/microphone
  2. Pick Krisp microphone from the list of available options. 

Setting Up Krisp With Microsoft Edge

To set up Krisp with Microsoft Edge follow the steps below:

  1. Copy the following URL in your Opera browser bar: edge://settings/content/microphone
  2. Pick Krisp microphone from the list of available options. 

Setting Up Krisp With Mozilla Firefox

You won’t be able to change the sound settings if you use Mozilla Firefox, as this browser doesn’t have dedicated sound settings. It will use the default microphone indicated by your Windows OS. You can change that in Windows sound settings by using the steps in this section. 

How to Set Up Krisp With Any App on Windows

Krisp is compatible with over 800 different apps and web apps. Essentially, Krisp can be used with any app that uses your microphone or speaker. 

In order to work with Krisp, all an app needs is to:

  • Have dedicated audio settings. 
  • Work with virtual devices in general. 

If the app meets these two conditions, you can simply choose the microphone and speaker you want to use within the Krisp settings and activate the noise cancellation toggles. 

Then, you can simple choose Krisp as the speaker and microphone in the audio settings of the app you want to use. The follow example is from Zoom: 

What happens when the app lacks audio settings?

When it comes to using Krisp with an application, you’ll generally need to choose Krisp as the microphone and speaker in the audio settings of that app. 

However, some applications don’t have dedicated audio settings. Therefore, you won’t be able to select Krisp directly. 

In that situation, you’ll generally need to select Krisp microphone as your system default device. Then, any app that doesn’t have dedicated audio settings will use the Krisp microphone. 

Desktop Apps

If you are using a desktop app that doesn’t allow you to adjust the audio settings, you can simply set the Krisp microphone as the Windows system default microphone. Then, it will be used in any app on your computer. 

Web Applications

If you are using a web app that doesn’t allow you to adjust the audio settings, try the above workaround and set the Krisp microphone as the system default microphone in your Windows sound settings. 

You can also try the steps listed above for your particular browser in the “Setting Up Krisp in Your Browser” section. 

Although you can set Krisp microphone as your default device, you won’t be able to do the same with Krisp speaker. This is because Krisp filters out everything except the human voice. Any system sounds would be considered noise and would be filtered by Krisp. 

Selecting Krisp as System Default Device in Windows

Here’s how to select Krisp as your system default device, so that it will automatically be selected by any apps that don’t have dedicated audio settings. 

  1. Open the app you want to use. 
  2. Open the Windows Start Menu and select “Sound Settings” and scroll down. 
  3. Choose “Advanced Sound Options”

  4. Choose the Krisp speaker and microphone as the selected app.

Note: Don’t choose the speaker and microphone from the “Advanced Sound Options” for app that already have dedicated app settings. This can mix-ups and incorrect settings. 

Also, don’t choose Krisp speaker and microphone for the Krisp app itself. It should be set to Default
